in this issue:

Guest speaker Jeff Slotnick discusses “organizational resiliency” in addressing risk management for an enterprise, the BBRC Rotary Student of the Month and Rotarian of the Month will be announced, and updates will be given on the BBRC 10K and Dine-Around.

speaker program:

Jim Gordon introduced our guest speaker, Jeff Slotnick, Chief Security Office for OR3M.  Jeff’s discussion focused on “organizational resiliency” in approaching enterprise risk management.  Resilient organizations are better able to adapt to changes in their environment, including disruptive events.  Jeff’s organization helps others prepare for these changing conditions.

Jeff discussed some of the benefits of being resilient:

  • Fewer surprises
  • Exploit opportunities
  • Improved planning
  • Economic efficiency
  • Improved stakeholder relations
  • Improved decision making
  • Enhanced service delivery and reporting
  • Better accountability

Jeff discussed internal and external factors and challenges to the resiliency of a business, including the effects of natural disasters.  After being asked by one member what he does personally to prepare for the effects of a disruptive event such as a natural disaster, and giving a thorough answer, another member jokingly asked Jeff where he lived (since he was so well prepared!).  He provided his contact information (but not his home address!) for further questions:

President Scott Sadler mentioned Fred Janssen’s son who has been diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma, and asked for members’ thoughts and prayers.  This is a note from Fred to members:

My 16 year old son Jonathan was just diagnosed last week with cancer (Burkitt’s Lymphoma).  His first round of chemo starts in a couple of hours here at Seattle Children’s.  We’ve recapped the story at this website: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jonathanjanssen.  In spite of everything, all is well and we are looking for complete elimination of the cancer.  He is an amazing young man and God has shown his loving hand in many ways in the midst of this ‘stuff’ that – as we all know – just happens. Wanted my Rotary family to know and I do ask for your prayers.

Robin Callan introduced the Rotary Student of the Month, Tenley Weinstein of Eastside Preparatory School and her father Bill who was in attendance.  Tenley plays soccer, and is active volunteering with Northwest Harvest.  She kindly recognized our club’s efforts at Northwest Harvest.  Tenley began volunteering in June 2013, doing filing and food packaging for Northwest Harvest.  She is interested in a career with a non-for –profit focus and social service after college.

Mike Ralph gave an update for the upcoming 10K, recognizing many sponsors, and encouraging others to sponsor and/or volunteer during the run.  John Cherry challenged club members to commit to at least one call this week to obtain a sponsor.

Tanya Franzen mentioned the upcoming Dine-Around date choices (March 28, 29 and 30) and asked for someone to host each date.  This is a fun way to relax and get to know fellow club members.  You can let Tanya know if you’d like to host or participate, or register on the BBRC website. Laura Adams Guy mentioned we need three club volunteers to provide activities for our visiting exchange student, Lenni Schiller from 12-6 on three dates in early April.  Carmela Ramaglia volunteered for one date.
