Tom provided a comprehensive history of the University of Washington football programs focusing on the major eras in Husky football history, featuring the best teams, the greatest games, the biggest comebacks, and the most exciting and unexpected moments. From the UW campus beginnings in 1895 and University Field completed in 1906 for home football games to the construction of the new Husky Stadium and current economics of Husky Athletics, Tom presented a look through time.

Tom told the history on legendary coaches like Gil Dobie (1908-1916), Enoch Bagshaw (1921-1929), and, the most successful coach in Husky history, Don James. He noted renowned players like All-American George Wilson (1926), Paul Schwegler (1930-31), Hugh McElhenny (1949-1951, who still holds the record for most rushing yards in a single game of 296 yards), Don Heinrich (Quarterback All-American 1950 & 1952), Rick Redman (All-American 1963 & 1964), Steve Emtman (1989-1992, “the most decorated player in Husky history”), Marques Tuiasosopo (1997-2000, “an efficient passer, an outstanding runner, a great leader and an unsurpassed competitor”), and Jake Locker (2007-2010, “one of the most admired athletes in Husky history”). Tom also recounted the greatest games including 1960, 1961 and 1964 Rose Bowl games along with others.

The Husky Athletics is well and strong.

• A 2012 report indicated that only 23 of the 120 schools in Division 1 generated a profit in 2011 – Washington was one of them.

• Washington gets no financial support from the University Administration and very little from the State ($3.1 million for Title IX tuition waivers).

• In the 2011-2012 fiscal year, total operating revenue was $82.6 million and total operating expenses were $73.8MM with a net of $8.8MM.

• Only football and men’s basketball showed a net profit – football $17.0MM on revenue of $39.4MM and basketball $4.5MM on revenue of $10.5MM.
