Speaker Program
Past Pres. John Martinka introduced Dr. Joseph M. Phillips, who has been the Dean of the Seattle University Business School since 2001. Dean Phillips provided an overview of the school’s growth, some differences from the past in teaching style for current students, as well as a method of learning by doing. He used five
student examples to show the different ways in which students generated an idea for a business, worked with facility, alumni and local business leaders as mentors, created a businesses plan, developed methods to raise funds, and got their business or non profit off the ground. He described how each encountered multiple challenges along the way that had to be overcome. To date, some student’s “businesses” were more successful than others but all resulted in a great practical learning experience for the students. This type of “training/education” is a part of many business schools and has turned out to be very effective in preparing students for working in the everyday world and greatly enhanced their entrepreneurial skills and confidence in their own abilities.
BBRC members had multiple questions and gave Dr Phillips enthusiastic applause when Pres.Chris rose, handed a card to him and announced BBRC would donate 1000 pounds of fresh produce in his name to thank him for his presentation to BBRC.Glenn Foster and Multitech Syngergies, were the proud BBRC sponsor who made this donation possible.
Club Business
President Chris opened our music test with “Taking Care of Business” which fit perfectly with the Speaker and Topic.
The invocation and pledge was done by longtime member Tom Helbling with Past. Pres. Jim Zidar introducing visiting Rotarians and Guests.
Andrew Face expertly operated the audio and visual effects, during Michel Carter absence, and Roger Allington and Steve Szirmai acted as hosts.
Martin Clavijo briefly explained the last years BBRC New Member Project that included obtaining a Dist 5030 $3500 grant to match BBRC funding for rehabilitation of the Bell Red Road YMCA , children’s playground, and repainting a lengthy exterior blank wall with a student inspired graphic mural developed with an
adult artists supervision. He introduced YMCA Member Services Director Tana Graedel, who provided an oral and visual over view of the project, including “competitive” solicitation of students to create ideas and designs for the mural portion, installing new fencing, a drain, and repairing the surface of the play area and re-barking it. In addition to the funding, regrading of the surface and re-barking was the “hands on” part done by BBRC The mural is a beautiful example of youthful creativity at work.
Pres. Elect Scott Sadler and Chair Katherine DeStephano gave an updated report on our successful fund-raising and fun from the Bellevue 10K/5K Run/Walk and Kids Dash on April 28th.
Howard Johnson is traveling and will give a detailed report on the “numbers” next Friday. Scott and Katherine then pulled to the podium a large number of members who were on the BBRC 10K corrdinating committee or headed a specific committee and thanked them for their dedication and hard work. They handed out clever metals (a miniature copy of the graphic on the front of the 10K running shirts) as a Thank You and reminder. Scott then thanked everyone in BBRC for their great support and presented our energizer leader Katherine flowers and a big Thank You for her inspiration and leadership in running another very successful “fun” fund-raising event.
Larry May presented the BBRC Student of the Year plaque to Kevin Torres from Eastside Academy, an alternative high school for teens who have not done well in regular schools. He, with support from school staff and church membership, turned his life around and became an outstanding student, positive role model to his peers, and participated in a broad array of community service. His inspiring talk was a well done video of his live presentation of his story of transformation before about 4000 members of Bellevue First Presbyterian Church, which sponsors Eastside Academy. He was given a standing ovation by our enthusiast BBRC members.
